The Bega Valley Shire Council on the New South Wales far south coast has issued a boil water alert for people on the Bemboka, Bega, Kalaru and Tathra water supply systems for the next few days.
The council says it is one of the first alerts of this kind for 15 years, but it is only a precautionary measure after the recent heavy rain.
The rain also caused the sewerage system to overflow, and the council has discharged partially treated sewage into the Bermagui and Bega Rivers.

Health experts probe E. coli outbreak
Residents of Bowen in north Queensland have been told to boil their tap water after bacteria was found in the local supply.
Routine monitoring of the water supply to Bowen has found unusually high levels of E. coli and there are concerns other harmful bacteria may be present.
Queensland Health is working with the Whitsunday Regional Council to determine the cause of the outbreak, with a water specialist due to arrive in Bowen today.
Mayor Mike Brunker says it will be some time before the water is clean enough to drink.
"We believe that it could be due to the fact that we have had a lot of high rainfall in Bowen in the last fortnight," he said.

Sorell residents in Tasmania's south east are warned to boil all drinking water until further notice.
The boil water alert for Sorell comes after Rosny and Montague Bay were given the all clear following a weekend boil water alert because of higher than acceptable levels of e coli found in the water supply.
The water supply for Rosny and Montague Bay was flushed out and retested by Southern Water, which is in the process of doing the same for Sorell. "One of the issues with unroofed reservoirs is that the effectiveness of disinfection is reduced by it being in an unroofed reservoir."
